what is form?
how do you live as a human being?
what is this very moment?
how can you consume in a way that offers?
how can you cultivate
wisdom and compassion?
what is interdependent co-origination?
is it seeing my values
as conditional byproducts of my cultural upbringing?
what is [your] commitment to diversity?
Openness and acceptance of all people,
or intention to bring more diversity
of identity and experience into [your] community?
Is it the kind of society that [allows] ... black women or black men or anyone ... [to seek] a dignified existence as a human being, that permits people to grow and develop according to their capacity, that gives them a sense of value not only for themselves but a sense of value for other human beings.
Is this the kind of society that is going to permit that?”
“What is the American society?
For example, the whole budget of the United States has been balanced in the direction of more money for defense and cutting down on anti-poverty money and money for the rehabilitation of the cities. The justification is that naturally we have to have defense, and we don’t want to rock the boat, the financial structure of the system, because there might be a recession. Therefore, the poor people and the bad conditions of the city will have to wait…
Now, is that the kind of system which you can expect to get in and find real value?”

can pain be a sound?
how many breaths will it take to realize
how many steps will it take to realize
how many moments will it take to realize
we are born and we die with every breath?
peace is every step?
each moment is the universe?
I wish to create musical experiences that serve as a reminder.
that it is okay, that each of us belongs in our environment, that there is space and freedom in each moment.

a score is not composed as much as a situation in which the piece occurs, one of entering a space and tuning into its preexisting sound repeatedly through long tones, a situation that over time leans more towards a performance piece than a concert. The inspiration behind this repetitive process involves practices such as calligraphy, meditation, and improvisation, wherein given a simple task, it is possible to relate fully to the present moment by celebrating deviations from the task. Over time, this opens a mode of doing and being in which each new iteration draws from all previous iterations, all previous experience, and “each moment is the universe.”
